PJP #050 - Taking a spin

PIREPS:

Spins in a Cub

Mike describes a recent backcountry dead battery (and spare) which led him to hand prop his Cessna 180. He also discusses doing some intentional spins in his J3 Cub.

CFI Stew talks about a broken rudder cable that one of his students encountered on a long cross country trip. This is the same Cessna 182 that has caused many a runway closure in it's storied career.

Pilot Stu describes an opportunity to acquire a Cessna Corvalis high performance single engine aircraft.

PRODUCT REVIEW:

Mike review the iPad Mini, WiFi version. The size of the iPad mini is perfect for use in the cockpit. However, Mike is dissapointed with his choice of a 32gb model. He found that with all of the ForeFlight charts, plus audio and video he wants, he really should have opted for the 64gb model. If you will be using an iPad mini for cockpit use only (meaning no video or audio taking up space), the 32gb model may be good enough.

Also, the WiFi version does not have an internal GPS chip. For complete functionality, it really needs to be coupled with an external GPS. For Mike's purposes, that's fine since he plans to pair it with a Stratus or similar ADS/B, GPS and ADHRS unit.

PJP #049 - Boeing Test Pilot

This episode we discuss ending the summer flying season, tail wheels, and welcome a special guest: Bob Kay, a retired production test pilot for the Boeing Corporation.

Mike describes flying hard IFR in clear, albeit dark, skies. He also relates his visit to Indian Creek: a back country strip that might be able to use a control tower.

Pilot Stu talks about completing his tail wheel endorsement in a Super Decathlon.

PJP #048 - Traffic Patterns and Tail Trouble

PIREPS:

Mike has "trouble with his tail" as he describes landing with a damaged tailwheel. Using a high speed taxi, he extends a wheel landing to the ramp, keeping the tail wheel off the ground until he's ready to stop.

CFI Stew describes his recent flight to Aspen in a Cessna 182. Flatlander Stew does not get to fly in the mountains often, so it was a fun experience. He also experienced some 45 knot winds and tornado warnings at one of his stops along the way.

Pilot Stu had the opportunity to do some more formation flight while shooting a promotional video. The three ship mission included a Super Decathlon as the photo platform, and two SportCruisers as the beauty ships. You can see the video at http://ussportaircraft.com/rush

CrazedPilot.com Crazed Pilot CP-1 Headset
The CP-1 is a great starter headset. It's low priced, has good sound isolation, audio quality and comfort in a package well under $100. It's not a LightSpeed or Bose, but you could buy a dozen of them for the cost of one of those top end headsets. This product is aimed at the student pilot or as extra headsets for passengers.

PJP #047 – A New Baby

PIREPS:

•

CFIStew prepares for a new little one in his hangar, while Mike welcomes a mature beauty to his.

Stew welcomes Alexander Stoll, a 6lbs, 2oz pilot to be, born 5/12/13 at 11:15pm (after this episode was recorded.)

Mike's C180

Mike's new baby is a 1954 Cessna 180. It's essentially a taildragger version of a Cessna 182. At 230 hp, it's a great performer and sweet ride. He's also giving her some upgrades with wing extensions and a STOL kit.

•

The crew discusses getting checked out in a new type of aircraft, and getting to know the idiosyncrasies of a new bird.

CIGAR TIP and GUMPS
Here are two easy to remember checklists that are good for just about any GA piston aircraft: Takeoff Checklist:

C - Controls. Check the flight controls, such as the aileron, elevator, rudder, wing flaps, and cowl flaps.

I – Instruments

G – Gas. Check how much you have, and that the fuel selector and pumps are properly selected.

A – Altimeter setting

R – Run-up. Check engine gauges, and set power controls properly.

T – Trim. Set pitch trim, as well as rudder and aileron (if applicable).

I – Interior. Check belts, harnesses, and that the cabin door is closed and latched.

P – Propeller. Cycle the propeller, and set takeoff rpm if there is a controllable-pitch prop.

Landing Checklist:

G – Gas. Check to make sure the fuel is on the proper tank and pumps are properly selected.

U – Undercarriage. Make sure the gear is down if it’s a retractable-gear aircraft.

M – Mixture

P – Prop

S – Seatbelts

PJP #046 – Women in Aviation

PIREPS:

•	Mike discusses his commercial ferry flight, delivering his beloved Cessna 206 to it's new home. He camped under the wing along the way at interesting back country and mountain airstrips from Mexico Mountain to Telluride.
•	Stu describes his growing aviation business and exciting opportunities for instructors, mechanics, sales people, and support personnel as they open new locations. He's also been keeping Stew busy instructing and flying discovery flights.
•	Stew relates the perils of Chocolate Milk as he recounts a recent discovery flight with someone that loves their chocolate moo-juice.

SPECIAL GUESTS:

We welcome Mary Latimer and Victoria Neuville to the virtual hangar this month to discuss the Women of Aviation Worldwide Week. Mary is a CFI, DPE, A&P and founder of GIFT, Girls in Flight Training. GIFT was created to provide a safe place for women to come together for flight training in a friendly, supporting environment.

Victoria Neuville

Victoria is the US Chairperson for the Women of Aviation Worldwide week. She has coordinated with volunteers from around the world to host events in dozens of locations throughout the US and around the world. WOIW events are typically single day events held some time during the week of March 4th through 10th, 2013.
